Guided relaxation and focus

DeepWave

Listen to your mind.

Getting started Quick guide
  1. Choose Relaxation, then touch the central Zen circle to connect the two NaoX devices. Open Setup only when you need to change the participant or device count.
  2. Fit the earbuds comfortably. Wait until Signal quality shows Good.
  3. Touch the central Zen circle once. The session starts with a quiet 30-second baseline.
  4. Close your eyes and listen to MindScape, the adaptive natural soundscape guided by your EEG. It moves gradually through three environments: Storm uses stronger rain and wind for a state of mental agitation; Clearing becomes gentler as the mind settles; and Open Sky brings lighter weather and birds during deeper calm. The Zen circle follows the same states: amber for Storm, green for Clearing, and deep blue for Open Sky. Chimes mark stronger calm moments.
  5. In Audio, choose a MindScape style and preview Open Sky, Clearing, or Storm with Listen.
  6. DeepWave v0.1 uses the gentle Wind chime by default. You can choose another sound in the Audio panel.
  7. Touch the Zen circle when you want to finish, then touch it again to confirm.
  8. At the end, touch Save session if you want to keep the result in Session history.

Keep this page visible and your phone screen awake throughout the session.

Focused work Focus quick guide
  1. Choose Focus, then touch the central Zen circle to connect the NaoX devices and wait for a stable signal.
  2. Touch the Zen circle to start a quiet 30-second personal baseline.
  3. Work normally. DeepWave keeps the music slightly quieter while attention appears stable.
  4. If sustained mind-wandering risk is detected for more than 10 seconds, the music becomes gently more present and a short three-note refocus cue is played.
  5. In Audio, choose the background, the three-note motif, and its volume. Use Listen to compare motifs before starting.
  6. Poor signal quality reduces confidence in the estimate and is never treated as mind-wandering by itself.
  7. Touch the Zen circle twice to finish. This Focus mode is experimental and should not be interpreted as a diagnostic measure.
Technical instructions Technical quick guide
  1. DeepWave version: v1.2.0.
  2. Keep this page open and the screen awake during the full recording.
  3. Session view gives simple live feedback; use Technical view whenever you want to inspect EEG values and curves.
  4. Connect one or two NaoX devices, adjust the earbuds until signal quality is good, then touch Start.
  5. Good signal target: Amp max 0.1-25 uV, RMS 0.1-10 uV, and 1/f slope -4 to -0.5.
  6. Start automatically begins a 30-second baseline and estimates your personal alpha threshold.
  7. Use Previous settings to reuse the last baseline if needed.
  8. Calm moments are counted after baseline at 1.5, 3, and 5 SD above the baseline mean. Their chime sounds are spaced by a random 3-10 second pause to keep the soundscape gentle.
  9. Goal is optional and set to No by default; end the session when you decide it is finished.
  10. Deep music starts when signal quality becomes good, then Start gradually transitions to MindScape.
  11. MindScape moves continuously through three soundscapes: Storm at lower alpha, Clearing around your baseline, and Open Sky at higher alpha.
  12. Choose Local MP3 to use your own audio; the file stays on your device.
  13. Touch the central Zen circle for Start, End, and Save session; ending requires a second touch.
Focus specifications Technical quick guide
  1. DeepWave version: v1.2.0.
  2. Keep the page visible and the screen awake. EEG is processed locally in the browser at a nominal sampling rate of 500 Hz.
  3. Good signal target: Amp max 0.1-25 uV, RMS 0.1-10 uV, and 1/f slope -4 to -0.5. Poor signal suspends the focus estimate.
  4. Start records a 30-second personal baseline. Mean and SD are estimated separately for relative theta, alpha, and beta power.
  5. Relative bands use theta 4-7 Hz, alpha 8-12 Hz, and beta 13-20 Hz, each normalized by total power from 2-30 Hz.
  6. Mind-wandering risk = 0.45 theta Z - 0.30 alpha Z - 0.25 beta Z. Z scores are limited to -3 / +3.
  7. The risk is updated every 500 ms and smoothed with an EMA coefficient of 0.12, corresponding to roughly a 4-second time constant.
  8. Focused is below -0.50 sigma. Mind-wandering is above +0.25 sigma for 10 continuous seconds; values between them are transient.
  9. Music level is 25% in Focused, 40% in Transient, and 65% in Mind-wandering. Changes use a gradual 7-second ramp.
  10. A selectable refocus cue is played when sustained mind-wandering is confirmed. Its pattern and volume are configured in Audio.
  11. Technical view lets you inspect the live risk and modify the Focused and Mind-wandering thresholds.
